Kuasa nuklear
Kuasa nuklear (Jawi: ) ialah sebarang teknologi nuklear yang direka bagi menghasilkan tenaga berguna daripada nukleus-nukleus atom melalui tindak balas nuklear terkawal.
Kaedah yang digunakan untuk menjana tenaga ialah melalui pembelahan nuklear dan pereputan radioaktif. Namun, teknologi untuk pelakuran nuklear sedang giat dijalankan.[2]
Kesemua reaktor skala utiliti[3] memanaskan air bagi menghasilkan stim, kemudian ditukarkan kepada kerja mekanikal untuk menghasilkan tenaga elektrik atau pendorongan. Pada tahun 2015, 10.7% daripada kuasa elektrik di dunia datangnya daripada kuasa nuklear. Selain itu, lebih daripada 150 buah kapal berkuasa nuklear juga telah dibina, dan beberapa buah roket radioisotop telah dikeluarkan. Kuasa nuklear adalah satu sumber kuasa rendah karbon.
Tenaga nuklear mempunyai kadar kematian per unit tenaga yang terendah berbanding dengan sumber tenaga lain. Arang batu, petroleum, gas asli dan hidroelektrik menyebabkan lebih banyak kematian per unit tenaga disebabkan pencemaran udara dan kemalangan.[4] Sejak pengkomersialannya pada 1970-an, tenaga nuklear menghalang 1.84 juta kematian melibatkan pencemaran udara dan pembebasan 64 bilion tan nilai karbon dioksida setara yang dihasilkan oleh bahan api fosil.[5]
