Kanton Costa Rica
Costa Rica secara pentadbiran dibahagikan kepada tujuh wilayah yang dibahagikan kepada 83 kanton, dan ini dibahagikan lagi kepada daerah. Kanton adalah satu-satunya bahagian pentadbiran di Costa Rica yang memiliki kerajaan tempatan dalam bentuk majlis perbandaran . Setiap majlis perbandaran mempunyai datuk bandar sendiri dan beberapa wakil, semuanya dipilih melalui pilihan raya perbandaran setiap empat tahun.
14 kanton asal telah ditubuhkan pada tahun 1848, dan bilangannya telah meningkat secara beransur-ansur dengan pembahagian kanton sedia ada. Undang-undang no. 4366 pada 19 Ogos 1969, yang menggariskan penciptaan bahagian pentadbiran Costa Rica, menyatakan bahawa kanton baru hanya boleh diwujudkan jika mereka mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya satu peratus daripada jumlah penduduk republik itu, iaitu 4,301,712 pada banci terakhir (2011). [1] [2] Kanton terbaharu, Monteverde, telah dicipta pada 29 September 2021 dari kanton Puntarenas . [3]
Kanton terbesar mengikut populasi ialah ibu kota San José dengan populasi 288,054 . Kanton terkecil mengikut populasi ialah Turrubares dengan 5,512 penduduk. [2] Kanton terbesar mengikut kawasan darat ialah San Carlos, yang merangkumi 3,347.98 km2 (1,292.66 bt2) , manakala yang terkecil ialah Flores pada 6.96 km2 (2.69 bt2) . [4]
